Judging by the following information would you say my mum has depression?
Okay, she's 37, she doesn't work and hasnt for as long as I can remember (and I'm not 16)
She has General Anxiety Disorder for which she takes prescribed medication for.
She sleeps for around 3 or more hours in the middle of the day every day
Is always irritable
Always assumes that people are having a go at her
Cannot handle any sort of emotional situation
She has a lower then average intelligence which at times is very obvious
She cannot handle financial situations
When she is severley upset she cuts her self. (only on occasion though like when my dad nearly died last year)
Has once before in her life tried to commit sucide
Had a fairly rough child hood
does not try to help eliminate stress for my dad, but creates alot of it.
But the thing that makes me think otherwsie is that she has days where she seems to be as normal as she can get.
Pretty soon my dad has to go in for a triple by-pass, if he doesnt survive I dont expect to have a mother too long after that either
I'm pretty sure you already know the answer to the question but are seeking justification for refering her to a mental health team or bringing up the situation with other family members – am I right?
She sounds very unwell & you obviously care about her a lot so I would do what is best for her & seek a referal to a mental health team. She will hate you for a while but once she is properly treated & can think clearly she will see that what you did saved her life.
Good luck.
