Mood disorder has been getting their share of sufferers. Almost 44 million Americans fall victim to a certain type of mental disorder every year. Aside from complex imbalances in the brain's chemistry, you can also credit the increased incidence of mood swings to certain environmental factors that can trigger the onset of such disorders.

There are a number of medical treatments available for the different mood disorders. The good news to this is that people who suffer from such conditions, even the most serious ones, can live a productive life with the right treatment. The two most common types of mood disorders, depression and bi-polar disorder have their own respective treatments available because of their difference in affecting the lives of sufferers.

Bi-polar disorder sufferers are identified by their extreme mood swings interrupted by generally normal behavior. This type of mood disorder tends to run in families and may begin in the mid-twenties and can usually continue throughout life.

Bi-polar disorder sufferers may experience irritable mood swings, inflated self-esteem, increased energy, and decreased need for sleep. The disorder will also lead them to experience feelings of invulnerability, poor judgment, heightened sex drive and denial that anything is wrong. And at any time, it will suddenly lead to feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, thoughts of death or suicide, and suicide attempts. Mania and depression may vary in both duration and degree of intensity.

Eighty to ninety percent of people who have bipolar disorder can be treated effectively by an effective mix of medication and psychotherapy. Emotional support and assistance is important in identifying signs of relapse to avert a full-blown episode of bipolar disorder. Commonly prescribed mood stabilizers such as lithium carbonate, carbamazepine, and valproate are being used to treat bipolar disorder.

Everyone can feel sad at one time or another. But when a person's feelings of sadness continue for long periods beyond a few weeks, he or she may already be suffering from depression. Although researchers don't yet exactly know what triggers depression, it is widely believed that two neurotransmitters- serotonin and norepinephrine are somehow involved.

Symptoms associated with depression are changes in appetite and sleeping patterns, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and inappropriate guilt. Depressed people also feel a loss of interest or pleasure in doing favorite activities, intense fatigue, and inability to concentrate. Serious depression will then lead to overwhelming sadness, disturbed thinking and the presence of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches as well as suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

There are three major types of medication are used to treat depression. They are grouped according to how they treat the disorder- tricyclics, the newer selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or SSRI's, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAO inhibitors. There is also a type of therapy that makes use of small amounts of electricity applied to the scalp to affect neurotransmitters in the brain.

Known as Electroconvulsive Therapy or ECT, this highly controversial and potentially life-saving technique is considered only when other therapies have failed to treat depression or when a person is seriously medically ill or unable to take medication. ECT is also being used when a person is very likely to commit suicide. Substantial improvements in the equipment, dosing guidelines and anesthesia have lead to the reduction of the possibility of side effects.

Take Vitamins to Mitigate Mental Illness

The concept of nutrition and mental illness is not a particularly popular topic. Many people cannot readily make the link between mental health and nutrition. The simple fact though is that proper nutrition boost optimum biochemistry within the body and the brain. The brain in turn facilitates moods and mental processes, and naturally benefits from proper nutrition as well.

You may not be aware of the fact that mental illness is one of the more common illnesses that plague one’s health in America. The fact that this may not be common knowledge is due to that fact that a lot of individuals remain undiagnosed and untreated. If you think about the prevalent lifestyle that most Americans indulge in, it is not hard to see why more and more individuals suffer from mood disorders.

Individuals live increasingly isolated lives because of excessive dependence and misuse of the internet and television. Health and nutrition suffer from the fast food mentality which is a result of a highly hectic lifestyle.

Without discounting the fact that some instances of mood disorders are genetic, there is still no denying the fact that proper and better nutrition can help us combat illnesses and improve our health, including that of the mental realm.

As we all know, the substance called serotonin is greatly linked with moods and depression. Some individuals have been found to be predisposed to suffer from low levels of serotonin in the body which results in the inability to control emotions and moods and more likely will suffer from mood disorders.

Did you however know that serotonin is found greatly in our gastrointestinal tract and is produced in our gut? Given this fact, it is important to seriously consider the link between major depression and nutrition.

Truth of the matter is, life is not always a piece of cake. Every moment is an opportunity for something to not go as we planned and therefore cause us to be unhappy. Despite this though, we as sentient beings should be able to choose whether to be happy or unhappy given certain stimuli. The inability to choose to be happy is the major consequence of mood disorders.

If you are not diagnosed with clinical depression but still suffer from sadness and a general lackluster attitude towards life, you may want to try to improve your nutrition to improve your mood. Afterall, although the concept of a link between major depression and nutrition is not yet well established, there is no way to lose from a conscious effort to improve one’s health and nutrition.

Start better nutritional health by adopting a well balanced diet. Don’t forget to take supplements because it may be difficult to get all the proper vitamins and nutrients just from the food we eat.

If you do enough research, you will see that taking vitamin B complex has the benefit of improved moods. Individuals who are not vitamin B deficient have better faculties to fight depression and anxiety.

It is important not to dismiss the link between major depression and nutrition because it actually makes sense to protect physical and mental health through the proper nutrition. We are all familiar with the saying that we are what we eat and that adage also applies to occurrences of major depression linked with poor nutrition.

Helping little ones cope up with sadness…

Sadness-just like any emotion-is a normal emotional phase any person has to go through. Due to the drastic shifts and changes in the events in people's lives, sadness occurs and usually lightens as soon as a difficulty or an issue is resolved. But, if not given proper attention, sadness can lead to depression that can cause more complicated emotional disturbances.

Just like grown ups, kids-especially those who are already in preschool-also experience sadness at this early stages of their lives. Due to several behavioral and sociological factors, little children can be prone to sadness especially if they are not given enough time, assurance, caring and support from their parents or peers.

Although it might seem absurd that preschool children experience sadness that can lead to depression as they grow older, it should also be considered that when this nonchalance over the child's melancholy is not given proper attention, it can result to a more complex emotional problem in the future.

FIGHTING THE MONSTER

In order to alleviate sadness that can eventually lead to depression, parents and teachers are advised to be more attentive and supportive of the little ones. Aside from paying more attention to preschool children, here are some things adults can do in order to help young ones to deal with sadness:

1. Pay attention to whatever the child asks or demands. Paying more attention to the inquisitions and requests of children will make them feel more important and can help them see things in a positive manner.

2. Listen to what the child says. Listening intently to the stories, views, and opinions of a child can help him or her develop the self-confidence he or she needs in order to deal with sadness when it attacks.

3. Always ask the child how he or she feels. Being interested about the experience of a child in a day or asking him or her how she feels about certain things will make the child think he or she is important. The felling of significance can help him or her cope up with sadness knowing that his/her parents or guardian regards him/her an important being.

4. Spend quality time together. Although you're busy, make sure that you spend quality time with the child so you are updated what's going on in his/her life. This time can also help the child veer away from the sadness he/she feels because there are people who are willing to spend fun and quality time with them.

5. Be observant. If you notice that the mood of the child constantly fluctuates or he or she loses the drive to do something he/she enjoys doing before, it is time to ask what's wrong. Observing the child's behavior can also greatly help you determine what's bothering the child, thus, it can help in coping up with sadness.

6. Always assure the child of your love and support. Saying "I love you" daily or as often as you can help the child cope up with sadness he or she feels whenever you're not around. The assurance of your love and support can also give them the confidence to be more confident of themselves.

7. Teach the preschool child to have a positive outlook in life. As early as now, you can teach the child to have a positive outlook in life by teaching him or her to be more self-independent and self-sufficient. You can also teach the child to have a positive outlook in life by exposing him or her to things and experiences that can help the child develop more positive strategies especially in dealing with sadness.

8. Nurture the child's inclinations. Encouraging and nurturing the child's interests, hobbies, and inclinations will make him or her feel that you support his or her decisions and choices.

9. Be a role model. Showing your child positive approaches in dealing with sadness can help him or her acquire those methods when he/she has to deal with sadness.

10. Always keep the communication lines open.

If you're the sort of person who tends to place yourself down or never gives yourself the benefit of the doubt, you may have a tendency to trigger a nonessential anxiety. It might then lead to intensive worry or perhaps depression. And the very next thing you know you are having a panic attack, can't do anything right and feel hopeless. But there are ways to eliminate panic attacks completely…

Rather than beating yourself up, why not attempt to talk yourself up? Tell yourself that things are going to be fine.

In truth, the majority of the things we fret about would never occur. When you become concerned, you will notice that your breathing rate hikes and you begin to take short breaths.

This could make you feel panic and more concerned. By slowing your respiring and concentrating on it, you'll be in a position to control your mind better and keep your panic attack in check.

Countdown from a hundred

Counting down from a hundred is another helpful self help tip for panic attacks. The idea has similarities to the respiring methodology. Learn how to look on the brighter side of life, learn how to target the solutions rather than issues.

Learn how to Breathe Properly Correct respiring can help calm your mind and body. And it is really easy to do, just put your left hand on your gut and begin to breathe in slowly and awfully thru your nose, then out thru your mouth. You will feel that your hand moves in and out as your stomach expands and contracts slowly. As you let your body takes in the oxygen it needs slowly and gradually, your mind and body begin to calm down. Practice the tips constantly and they'll prove to be helpful in helping you to stay calm and in control of your stress.

Identify Your Symptoms

The self help methodologies for panic attacks will be better if you might start by identifying the symptoms or triggers that cause your anxiety level to rise suddenly and lead to panic attacks. Try your best to record down the events and feelings that you were going thru when panic attacks struk. The idea here is to spot the series of events so you could find paths to cope when they occur again. Self Talk to Curb Panic Attacks Chronic worriers always have nonessential negative thoughts or negative self talk that may trigger stress and panic attack.

I'm interested in information as to how sexual function can be affected by depression, especially in males. I have read it can harm libido. Can it harm it in other ways as well? If so, what are these ways?

I ask because I am a depressed male experiencing not only impotence and low libido but low genital sensitivity and anorgasmia as well. Can depression cause these things, or should I be looking for some other cause? Please provide citation if at all possible.

I am not interested in how psychiatric medications might affect these areas, just depression.

Thanks

Well when you are depressed, there is really not a whole lot you care about or are interested in.
And sex is not on your priority list of things to do.
To pass a day is big enough without the hassle of dealing with sex as well.
Your life is on a standstill.
Nothing excites you:hence the impotence, low sex drive, low sensitivity etc.
So yes depression can cause all of this.
I feel sorry for you:
Colors.
