Mood disorder has been getting their share of sufferers. Almost 44 million Americans fall victim to a certain type of mental disorder every year. Aside from complex imbalances in the brain's chemistry, you can also credit the increased incidence of mood swings to certain environmental factors that can trigger the onset of such disorders.

There are a number of medical treatments available for the different mood disorders. The good news to this is that people who suffer from such conditions, even the most serious ones, can live a productive life with the right treatment. The two most common types of mood disorders, depression and bi-polar disorder have their own respective treatments available because of their difference in affecting the lives of sufferers.

Bi-polar disorder sufferers are identified by their extreme mood swings interrupted by generally normal behavior. This type of mood disorder tends to run in families and may begin in the mid-twenties and can usually continue throughout life.

Bi-polar disorder sufferers may experience irritable mood swings, inflated self-esteem, increased energy, and decreased need for sleep. The disorder will also lead them to experience feelings of invulnerability, poor judgment, heightened sex drive and denial that anything is wrong. And at any time, it will suddenly lead to feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, thoughts of death or suicide, and suicide attempts. Mania and depression may vary in both duration and degree of intensity.

Eighty to ninety percent of people who have bipolar disorder can be treated effectively by an effective mix of medication and psychotherapy. Emotional support and assistance is important in identifying signs of relapse to avert a full-blown episode of bipolar disorder. Commonly prescribed mood stabilizers such as lithium carbonate, carbamazepine, and valproate are being used to treat bipolar disorder.

Everyone can feel sad at one time or another. But when a person's feelings of sadness continue for long periods beyond a few weeks, he or she may already be suffering from depression. Although researchers don't yet exactly know what triggers depression, it is widely believed that two neurotransmitters- serotonin and norepinephrine are somehow involved.

Symptoms associated with depression are changes in appetite and sleeping patterns, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and inappropriate guilt. Depressed people also feel a loss of interest or pleasure in doing favorite activities, intense fatigue, and inability to concentrate. Serious depression will then lead to overwhelming sadness, disturbed thinking and the presence of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches as well as suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

There are three major types of medication are used to treat depression. They are grouped according to how they treat the disorder- tricyclics, the newer selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or SSRI's, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAO inhibitors. There is also a type of therapy that makes use of small amounts of electricity applied to the scalp to affect neurotransmitters in the brain.

Known as Electroconvulsive Therapy or ECT, this highly controversial and potentially life-saving technique is considered only when other therapies have failed to treat depression or when a person is seriously medically ill or unable to take medication. ECT is also being used when a person is very likely to commit suicide. Substantial improvements in the equipment, dosing guidelines and anesthesia have lead to the reduction of the possibility of side effects.

Take Vitamins to Mitigate Mental Illness

The concept of nutrition and mental illness is not a particularly popular topic. Many people cannot readily make the link between mental health and nutrition. The simple fact though is that proper nutrition boost optimum biochemistry within the body and the brain. The brain in turn facilitates moods and mental processes, and naturally benefits from proper nutrition as well.

You may not be aware of the fact that mental illness is one of the more common illnesses that plague one’s health in America. The fact that this may not be common knowledge is due to that fact that a lot of individuals remain undiagnosed and untreated. If you think about the prevalent lifestyle that most Americans indulge in, it is not hard to see why more and more individuals suffer from mood disorders.

Individuals live increasingly isolated lives because of excessive dependence and misuse of the internet and television. Health and nutrition suffer from the fast food mentality which is a result of a highly hectic lifestyle.

Without discounting the fact that some instances of mood disorders are genetic, there is still no denying the fact that proper and better nutrition can help us combat illnesses and improve our health, including that of the mental realm.

As we all know, the substance called serotonin is greatly linked with moods and depression. Some individuals have been found to be predisposed to suffer from low levels of serotonin in the body which results in the inability to control emotions and moods and more likely will suffer from mood disorders.

Did you however know that serotonin is found greatly in our gastrointestinal tract and is produced in our gut? Given this fact, it is important to seriously consider the link between major depression and nutrition.

Truth of the matter is, life is not always a piece of cake. Every moment is an opportunity for something to not go as we planned and therefore cause us to be unhappy. Despite this though, we as sentient beings should be able to choose whether to be happy or unhappy given certain stimuli. The inability to choose to be happy is the major consequence of mood disorders.

If you are not diagnosed with clinical depression but still suffer from sadness and a general lackluster attitude towards life, you may want to try to improve your nutrition to improve your mood. Afterall, although the concept of a link between major depression and nutrition is not yet well established, there is no way to lose from a conscious effort to improve one’s health and nutrition.

Start better nutritional health by adopting a well balanced diet. Don’t forget to take supplements because it may be difficult to get all the proper vitamins and nutrients just from the food we eat.

If you do enough research, you will see that taking vitamin B complex has the benefit of improved moods. Individuals who are not vitamin B deficient have better faculties to fight depression and anxiety.

It is important not to dismiss the link between major depression and nutrition because it actually makes sense to protect physical and mental health through the proper nutrition. We are all familiar with the saying that we are what we eat and that adage also applies to occurrences of major depression linked with poor nutrition.

Leptin And Bipolar Disorder

How can leptin be linked to bipolar disoder?

Leptin, a protein hormone that greatly affects the regulation of body weight in terms of metabolism and reproductive function, is one of the possible factors that affect the development of bipolar disorder.

Known as a protein product of the gene that is a key player in the regulation of the person's body fat, leptin is linked to bipolar disorder because of its lipoatrophic effect. Known to result to 30 to 50 percent loss of food intake, minimal increase in weight, loss of body fat and a sustained hyperlipidemia over the study period, leptin continues to be under study because it can play a major role in regulating the insulin levels of the body.

This protein-which is approximately 16 kDa in mass-is expressed predominantly by adipocytes. Leptin, which are secreted by the cells in the epithelium of a person's stomach and in the placenta, are also highly expressed in areas of the hypothalamus as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells-where there are leptin receptors.

Experts say that leptin can cause great physiological and psychological effects because it regulates food intake that control the body's energy expenditure and weight. It is believed that leptin is a significant component in the long-term regulation of body weight because it can provide the body with an index of nutritional status. Based on studies, leptin's effects on a person's body weight are usually mediated through effects on hypothalamic centers that control an individual's feeding behavior and appetite, body temperature and energy expenditure.

Today, the mechanisms by which leptin exerts its effects on metabolism are largely unknown and are quite complex. Aside from physiological effects, leptin can also adversely affect the reproductive function of the body. If there is a lack of leptin in the body, it can affect the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and eventually lutenize the follicle-stimulating hormones from a person's anterior pituitary.

LEPTIN AND BIPOLAR DISORDER

Experts also agree that the effect of leptin is not confined to the regulation of body fat or insulin but also to a diverse group of cells of a person. Being a cytokine, leptin targets various cells in the body that can possibly lead to disease such bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder-a mental condition that severely affects a person's behavior-is one the illnesses that can be hard to determine. Characterized by over productiveness, sudden irrationality, and being unreasonable can destroy a person's life, family and career if it is not diagnosed and treated properly.

Because of the erratic mood swings and shifts in the pattern of a person suffering from this disease, experts say that bipolar disorder is hard to diagnose. The variations in a person's attitude make it a more complex disease to treat as well because some people show the signs of and depression that usually last for weeks, months, and even for years but for some, the disease only attacks with frequent but dramatic mood shifts.

According to studies, aside from dramatic mood shifts and changes, there is actually a whole spectrum of symptoms characterized by bipolar disorder. Some of these can be productive but can lead to catastrophic results once the mania or depression sets in because it can lead to death or suicide. So it is better if you recognize the problem and seek professional help from a psychiatrist as soon as possible.

Determining early bipolar disorder syndrome

Determining the early signs of bipolar disorder syndrome in children is quite a challenge for medical practitioners. The disorder in children manifests differently and doesn't follow the normal course as it would in adults who suffer from the syndrome. And to make matters worst, not only is it difficult to diagnose but the symptoms overlaps and is very similar to other childhood disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.

According to studies, bipolar disorder affects only 1% of the youth. However, the number is said to be rising. Technically, the definition of bipolar disorder is a mental illness that displays regular episodes of depression, manila and/or mixed states.

Recent studies indicate children and some adolescents manifest symptoms of both depressive and manic behaviors simultaneously. It should be noted that when bipolar disorder syndrome became apparent in children, it is an indication that the disorder is much severe than the ones that occur in adult patients. The disorder can occur to practically anyone. But there's a bigger chance the children will have the disorder if their parents also suffered from the illness.

Bipolar disorder is an alternating feeling of highs and lows. Among the most common symptoms of mania include sudden and harsh changes in moods. At one point, the kid is happy then the next he'll be silly, or very irritable, or angry, or agitated or even aggressive.

Also feelings of unrealistic highs in self-esteem such as feelings of having some superhero powers are symptoms of mania. If the teenager has sudden bursts of energy and can go for days without little or no sleep, he may be diagnosed as having bipolar disorder syndrome. Other symptoms include excessive talking, easily looses attention, and high risk-taking behaviors like abusing alcohol and drugs, reckless driving, or sexual promiscuity.

But since bipolar disorder covers both the extreme sides of moods, children and teenagers who suffer with the syndrome manifest also depressive symptoms like irritability, persistent sadness, thoughts of death or suicide, frequent crying, low energy level, fatigue, poor concentration, complaints of boredom, frequent complaints of physical illnesses, and changes in eating or sleeping patterns.

With children, bipolar disorder is often mistaken to be ADHD but for adolescents the syndrome is commonly diagnosed as schizophrenia and conduct disorder. Distinguishing between manic behaviors brought about by bipolar disorder and ADHD is not easy. Medications are not enough to make the diagnosis conclusive. Close and meticulous observations are needed to clearly identify and separate the symptoms of both illnesses.

It has been found out children who develop bipolar disorder will most likely display depressive behaviors first before the other symptoms. Moreover, the most prominent manic symptoms that are present in children with bipolar disorder are elation, feelings of grandiosity, racing thoughts, a decreased need for sleep, and hypersexuality. These five can differentiate bipolar disorder in children from ADHD.

When proper diagnosis has been made and confirmed, treating a child with bipolar disorder syndrome can be undertaken. Effective treatment of the illness starts with properly educating the patient and the family about bipolar disorder syndrome.

Treatment varies from medication to psychotherapy. But what is clear is that there is no single drug or treatment procedure that can cure bipolar disorder. Medications that stabilizes the moods are normally used, drugs like lithium and valproic acid. By stabilizing the moods, the gravity of the manic and depressive episodes will be reduced. Once the moods of the child or adolescent have been stabilized, then they could undergo psychotherapy sessions to help them understand and cope with their environment and society.

Helping little ones cope up with sadness…

Sadness-just like any emotion-is a normal emotional phase any person has to go through. Due to the drastic shifts and changes in the events in people's lives, sadness occurs and usually lightens as soon as a difficulty or an issue is resolved. But, if not given proper attention, sadness can lead to depression that can cause more complicated emotional disturbances.

Just like grown ups, kids-especially those who are already in preschool-also experience sadness at this early stages of their lives. Due to several behavioral and sociological factors, little children can be prone to sadness especially if they are not given enough time, assurance, caring and support from their parents or peers.

Although it might seem absurd that preschool children experience sadness that can lead to depression as they grow older, it should also be considered that when this nonchalance over the child's melancholy is not given proper attention, it can result to a more complex emotional problem in the future.

FIGHTING THE MONSTER

In order to alleviate sadness that can eventually lead to depression, parents and teachers are advised to be more attentive and supportive of the little ones. Aside from paying more attention to preschool children, here are some things adults can do in order to help young ones to deal with sadness:

1. Pay attention to whatever the child asks or demands. Paying more attention to the inquisitions and requests of children will make them feel more important and can help them see things in a positive manner.

2. Listen to what the child says. Listening intently to the stories, views, and opinions of a child can help him or her develop the self-confidence he or she needs in order to deal with sadness when it attacks.

3. Always ask the child how he or she feels. Being interested about the experience of a child in a day or asking him or her how she feels about certain things will make the child think he or she is important. The felling of significance can help him or her cope up with sadness knowing that his/her parents or guardian regards him/her an important being.

4. Spend quality time together. Although you're busy, make sure that you spend quality time with the child so you are updated what's going on in his/her life. This time can also help the child veer away from the sadness he/she feels because there are people who are willing to spend fun and quality time with them.

5. Be observant. If you notice that the mood of the child constantly fluctuates or he or she loses the drive to do something he/she enjoys doing before, it is time to ask what's wrong. Observing the child's behavior can also greatly help you determine what's bothering the child, thus, it can help in coping up with sadness.

6. Always assure the child of your love and support. Saying "I love you" daily or as often as you can help the child cope up with sadness he or she feels whenever you're not around. The assurance of your love and support can also give them the confidence to be more confident of themselves.

7. Teach the preschool child to have a positive outlook in life. As early as now, you can teach the child to have a positive outlook in life by teaching him or her to be more self-independent and self-sufficient. You can also teach the child to have a positive outlook in life by exposing him or her to things and experiences that can help the child develop more positive strategies especially in dealing with sadness.

8. Nurture the child's inclinations. Encouraging and nurturing the child's interests, hobbies, and inclinations will make him or her feel that you support his or her decisions and choices.

9. Be a role model. Showing your child positive approaches in dealing with sadness can help him or her acquire those methods when he/she has to deal with sadness.

10. Always keep the communication lines open.

Check out this informative article on teenage depression…

10 Negative Effects Of Teen Depression

Teen depression can have detrimental effects on your child's life. The first step to helping is to identify the difference between sadness and true depression.

Interestingly, there are differences between teen depression and adult depression, which makes it a bit more difficult to tell when a teen is depressed.

Irritable or angry: this quite often is the most common result of depression and might play out as being grumpy, hostile, easily frustrated or experiencing frequent outbursts of anger.

Vague aches and pains: headaches, stomach aches and other such complaints that do not seem to have a physical or medical cause can indicate that your teen is depressed.

Sensitive to criticism: While some sensitivity to criticism can be normal, a teen who appears overly upset is likely suffering from depression. Depressed teens often have low self esteem and self worth, making them more sensitive to rejection and failure.

Withdrawal from friends: Teens are likely to maintain some friendships while staying actively involved with others when they are depressed. Adults, on the other hand, tend to withdraw completely from family, friends and acquaintances. One sign to watch is when your teen drops old friendships and starts up with an entirely new crowd, especially if the crowd has different views than your teen.

It is crucial that teen depression be treated early to prevent serious and perhaps permanent problems. Left untreated, depression can lead to these 10 outcomes.

1. Low self esteem, triggered by feelings of worthlessness, failure, and inferiority.

2. Eating disorders including bulimia, anorexia and binge eating.

3. Problems at school resulting from low energy and difficulty concentrating. Watch for low grades, poor attendance, and lack of patience to complete schoolwork.

4. Running away is one cry for help by teens who are depressed.

5. Substance abuse (alcohol and drugs)

6. Self injury including various kinds of self-mutilation such as burning, cutting, hair pulling are sure signs of depression.

7. Other addictions including computer games and Internet surfing as an escape mechanism.

8. Violence becomes predominant in some depressed teens, which is based in self-hatred and hatred of others that can lead to homicide.

9 Dangerous or reckless behavior covers such things as binge drinking, unsafe sex, reckless driving and other careless behaviors.

10. Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are exceptional cries for help. Depressed teens who think of suicide will make death-related comments and talk of killing themselves. It is imperative to get immediate help for any teen or talks of suicide or death wishes.

Children and Depression – What Parents Can Do

All parents want to ensure that their kids are always healthy and happy. But what happens when happiness, or the lack of it, is a bigger problem that you expected? The truth of the matter is that childhood depression has become an increasingly larger problem in today's society than ever before. It might also shock you to know that it is something your own flesh and blood may be suffering from. If you are concerned that your child is suffering from depression, there are several courses of actions you could choose to take, and you will find that the sooner you act, the better it is for your child. There is a close link between children and depression these days, so parents should do all they can to prevent or manage this situation effectively.

What you should think about first is recognition. Essentially, childhood depression is an illness where feelings of depression continue for extended periods of time, and negatively affects the child's ability to function and cope. You may notice that depression can manifest in a variety of ways, from your children's moods and their physical appearances, to their behaviors and their mental states. You might notice a child who was once interested in a variety of things, let his or her world shrink a great deal by shutting them out of his or her life completely due to depression. Also, you may observe various physical symptoms, including weight and appetite loss, problems with digestion, headaches, migraines or irregular sleeping habits.

When thinking about childhood depression, bear in mind that younger children will usually develop more physical symptoms than older kids. This is because younger children tend to have less ability to express themselves as compared to older and more matured children.

If you wish to fight childhood depression, you ought to educate yourself on the issue. Speak with a professional counselor who has experience in this field and see what you can learn from him or her. The therapist will most likely have you bring the child in for several individual sessions to diagnose his condition.

When thinking about what you can do for your child on a more personal, day to day basis, you can begin by ensuring that you are always there for your child. Make sure that all lines of communication are kept open, and that your child knows that he can always go to you for all his needs. Many children feel that they are alone in the problems they face. Thus, simply reassuring them that they are not can make a huge difference in your child's life. Learn more about what your child does and his or her interests to improve your relationship. Encourage your child by providing good advice when there is a need to and lend a listening ear when he needs one.

Remember that childhood depression is something that is a very real today. Depression is a condition that both children and adults suffer from. So, understanding the relationship between children and depression will give parents a greater idea of how they can manage and prevent their children's condition from worsening.

According to a twenty-year study by Kaiser Permanente, between seventy
and eighty-five percent of illness is caused by stress, meaning that in
the U.S. alone stress is costing us about one-trillion dollars per year
in healthcare costs. Since most absenteeism is due to stress, US
business is losing upwards of $300 billion per year.

On a more personal level, it is disturbing to realize that aging is
accelerated by stress, and stress is a growing issue with all of us.
Studies show that change is stressful, even "good" change. So as we
computer jockeys settle into the saddle of a new age of rapidly
changing information, we need an edge that can help us stay healthy,
sane, "younger" and more vibrant, even as we are often at the very
center of the hurricane of modern change, such as keeping up with new
hardware and software.

Ironically an ancient mind/body tool provides the perfect balm for our
generation's modern problems — it is called "Tai Chi" (pronounced
tie-chee). T'ai Chi is a gentle series of relaxing motions that cleanse
the body's tissue of accumulated stress and, by doing so, boosts all
aspects of our health systems. According to emerging research
boosting the immune system's strength dramatically, while reducing the
incidence of depression, anxiety, and even reducing chronic pain
conditions, are just a few of T'ai Chi's myriad benefits.

What makes ancient T'ai Chi the perfect modern balm is that it doesn't
require special facilities or clothing, and doesn't even make you break
a sweat, meaning you can do it in office attire in an empty boardroom
just by kicking off your heels. Yet, it provides the same
euphoria of a long run, the cardiovascular benefit of moderate impact
aerobics, and burns nearly as many calories as downhill skiing.

Our time is filled with paradox. A problem in this modern age stems
from the great promise of the information age — a tidal wave of data
being created by and offered to our "left brain"; that part of our
minds that is analytical, calculating, and categorizing the world. Of
course, this is a powerful and important part of who we are. This is
the part of the mind that gets things done, pays the rent, builds the
houses, and makes the cars. Our "right brain,"
however, is getting left behind in our rapidly changing techno-world,
and this imbalance of thought processes is at the heart of modern
stress.

Our right brain is the feeling, smelling, sensing . . .
enjoying part of the mind. This is the part of the mind that smells the
flowers, not to analyze the smell, but to be filled with its beauty –
and this is the part that has been left behind in the digital world.
When we go to the cyber mall, for example, our right brain doesn't get
to play. The cyber mall is a wonderful thing that saves us time, money,
and gas for our cars (and thereby saves the environment), but there are
no Auntie Anne's Pretzels to smell in cyberspace, or warm sunlight
streaming in through the big skylights.

So what do we do? We get the best of both worlds. T'ai Chi is a series
of exercises to balance the mind. T'ai Chi teaches us to experience
life for sheer pleasure, thereby creating balance in our busy "get
things done yesterday"
world. If you learn T'ai Chi and practice in the morning before you sit
down at your computer, your right brain (the sensing and enjoying
brain) will be turned on more. You will feel the texture of your
computer keys. You will remember to take the time to get a nice cup of
green tea or herbal cinnamon spice tea, and you'll interrupt your
staccato keyboard occasionally to smell the tea's rich aroma, feel the
warmth in your hands, and breathe the breath of life deeply into your
lungs.

Although you are at the cutting edge of the information age revolution,
you are also in the garden of life. This will give you an edge in the
long run. Why? Because chronic stress diminishes our cognitive skills
and therefore, our creativity.

Einstein said, "Creativity is more important than knowledge." Even if
we have the world's knowledge at our fingertips, if we are too stressed
out to use the knowledge "creatively," we are much less effective.
Plus, we're not as much fun!

The bottom line is T'ai Chi is a set of exercises to practice enjoying
life. It's not enough just to say, "I'm going to enjoy life more." We
actually have to practice mind/body tools that can positively affect
our brain wave activity, in an integrative way, as T'ai Chi is proven
to do.

T'ai Chi is an extremely sophisticated mind/body science that evolved
over millennia, and is now being made available to all of us after
centuries of being closely guarded secrets in China. Even though the
practices are ancient, they are in many ways just as cutting edge as
the multi-gigabyte computer.

Don't just be "cutting edge" with your left-brain. Go all the way and
stretch the envelope with your right brain, too, by weaving T'ai Chi
into your life. You will be forever glad you did, as you discover
balance and calm in the eye of the modern world's ever accelerating
storm of changes rushing at us.

streaming in through the big skylights.

Celexa is an antidepressant used to treat clinical depression in patients. It is prescribed as a "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor" used to balance serotonin in the brain, providing relief from depression.

While Celexa can be effective, this medication is under alert by the FDA when combined with Triptan medications. Be sure your doctor knows all medications you are on, and do not stop this medication without your doctor as you could have possible serious side effects.

The FDA has issued an alert as of July 7Th 2006 Celexa is potentially life threatening when taken with Triptan Medications. A life threatening condition called "Serotonin Syndrome" can occur when medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like for example Celexa and medications used to treat migrain headaches known ad 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists, in other words, (triptans) are combined with Celexa. Before taking Celexa and triptan together, speak with your Doctor.

Some of the signs and symptoms of "Serotonin Syndrome" can include the following… restlessness, hallucinations, loss of coordination, rapid heartbeat, increase in body temperature, quick changes in blood pressure, overactive reflexes, diarrhea, coma, nausea and vomiting. The above side effects are more likely to occur while first starting or increasing medication.

Another alert issued at the same time, in regards to Celexa, pertains to persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) within infants. Studies conducted on pregnant mothers taking Celexas showed the possibility of infants being born with this condition. This condition creates a problem with the lungs and the heart in which the blood flows abnormally, creating a deficit of oxygen within the body of the newborn. Through these studies it showed that mothers five months pregnant or more, taking Celexa or any SSRI, for that matter, had six times the risk of developing PPHN than those mothers who did not take any sort of antidepressant while pregnant.

This information reflects FDA's current analysis of data available to FDA concerning this drug. FDA intends to update this sheet when additional information or analysis become available.

Patients at risk should not take Celexa or if you are taking another medication to treat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) and or if you have recently stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Celexa in a close time frame such as 14 days of taking MAOI medications can result in serious and even fatal reactions, such as high body temperature and coma seizures (convulsions).

MAOI medications do include (phenlezine sulfate), Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate), Marplan (isocarboxazid) and other brands.

As you can see above there are some serious risks involved with Celexa. This is not a complete list of possible side effects or serious conditions that can occur while taking Celexa. Check with your doctor for further information regarding it's uses, benefit, possible risks involved in your patient care with Celexa.

Disclaimer – The information presented here should not be interpreted as or substituted for medical advice. Please talk to a qualified professional for more information about Celexa.
