Anxiety Attacks on Teens

Stress is considered to be a fact of life but when the person is not able to handle it, the teenager will be prompted to engage in certain things such as smoking and drinking. If this is not enough, drugs are known to be the last resort.

But why do teens resort to other outlets to get out of the problem? Perhaps because parents are also adding to the pressure about excelling in school when there is enough stress already given by the teachers in the form of assignments and exams. When these two are combined, the outcomes is disastrous.

If the parent sees that the teen has a change in the behavior, perhaps it is time to give some space and offer words of comfort. After all, this is the right to do because those who don’t will only make the problem worse. Here are some examples of anxiety attacks on teenagers.

The first one is called depression. If the teen is not able to cope with how things are going in school, the body will just shut down and then give up.

The second one is known as obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD. Here, the teen will be so meticulous in every detail that everything must be at the right place every time.

In the United States, bullying has caused some to have anti social or isolation behavior. Teens who are not able to get help can become violent and go on a shooting spree which is quite tragic since innocent people are hurt or killed.

Instead of hurting others, the disorder can prompt the individual to deny oneself. In the end, the person may even decide to take one’s life which is also tragic given that the individual is still so young.

Luckily, anxiety attacks on teens is treatable. Parents who notice something is wrong should immediately talk to the teen and then consult a doctor.

A specialist will be able to give a better diagnosis even if mom or dad is around. The tests will involve an interview and even answering a few questionnaires. When this done, only then can the teen get the right treatment.

The person will have to undergo numerous counseling and therapy as well as take psychiatric drugs. One good example is Cortisol that has proven to be effective in adults and teens. Other things that can are also used are Librium, Valium or Xanax.

People should be aware that the use of any of these drugs have certain side effects. Since some of these are quite addictive, quickly giving up the medication may make the person experience withdrawal symptoms. But the most common are diarrhea, muscle cramping and weight loss among others.

There is another way to treat anxiety attacks for teens and this is through the use of herbal medicines. The person can drink tea or simply smell the incense coming from the various oils as one is resting peacefully. The good thing about this kind of therapeutic approach is that there are no know side effects unlike those associated with western medicine.
