Anti-Depressants and Drug
Interaction
Doctors claim
depression to be caused by an imbalance of certain
chemicals in the brain. Though the patient doesn’t exactly
believe that because anyone who has been there believe this
stems from something that has happened usually in the form
of an unfortunate event.
A few examples of these are
two lovers breaking up, a women who lost a child due to a
miscarriage or nervous breakdown because of the pressures of
work.
Anyone who is depressed will
not feel like eating and as a result lose weight. The
individual will also distance oneself from friends and family
and may even have suicidal tendencies.
The good news is that
depression can be overcome. The person will just have to be
diagnosed by a doctor to get proper counseling and
medication. The different types of anti-depressant drugs
have some ingredients which are addictive thus making it quite
challenging to quit.
Here are some
examples of these anti-depressants.
The first is known as an
SSRI’s which are used to inhibit serotonin reuptake.
Studies have shown that this drug is effective for those who
are thinking of committing suicide. This is proven to perform
better than MAOI’s or TCA’s which will let the experience side
effects such as diarrhea or impotence.
SNRI’s is another type of
drug that alleviates anxiety by putting the person to sleep.
This is very similar to Valium that is used by those who are
suffering from insomnia. The medication is very addictive so
the dosage being administered should be gradually reduced to
prevent withdrawal symptoms from taking place.
Among the different drugs
taken, buproprion is the most commonly used among patients.
This means it can do the functions of SSRI’s, and SNRI’s at the
same time. Most of these drugs.
These are three main types of
anti-depressants used in the market. Should the individual feel
uncomfortable with the drug interaction, perhaps something else
can be done to overcome depression.
One way is through
psychotherapy where a doctor will simply talk to the patient
about the cause of the problem and then find a way to make it
go away. No drugs will be used but the patient will have to do
some homework that will be discussed in the next
session.
Suicide is what some
depressed people see as the best way out of the problem. Though
drugs can be used to prevent this from happening, electro convulsive
therapy or ECT can also be used should the medication fail
to work.
This is a better version than
shock therapy that was once used on mental patients in the
hospital. The patient will have to drop by three times a week
for this to take place.
Another alternative way to
treat depression aside from drug interaction is self help. This
can only be done if the symptoms of the problem are minimal and
the person is still able to think properly on how to handle
this.
Overcoming depression may
take weeks and in some cases months. This really depends on how
strong the person is and how receptive one is to the kind of
help being provided by the doctor, family and
friends.
Change will happen over time
and before one knows it, the individual will feel better to be
able to stand up and face the challenges of life head
on.
